Skiing and Snowboarding
When it comes to winter activities in Jackson Hole, skiing and snowboarding are at the top of the list! Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is renowned for its world-class terrain, offering something for everyone—from gentle beginner slopes to more thrilling advanced runs. Whether it’s your first time on skis or you’re seasoned pros, your family can bond over the excitement of the slopes while soaking in the breathtaking mountain views.
Tips for a Fun Day on the Slopes
As someone based in Jackson Hole, here are a few extra tips for making the most of this fun winter activity in Jackson Hole.
Plan Ahead: Book lessons for beginners or kids to help them feel confident and safe on the mountain. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has fantastic instructors for all ages so take advantage!
Dress Warmly: Nothing ruins a good time more than freezing. Layer up with waterproof and insulated gear to stay comfortable in the snow. Don’t forget helmets and goggles!
Take Breaks: This one might be my favorite. Warm up with hot cocoa at one of the cozy lodges or enjoy a family lunch overlooking the slopes.
Explore Beyond Skiing: If some family members aren’t skiing, they can still enjoy gondola rides, tubing, or snowshoeing in the area. Keep reading for more winter activities to do with your family!
Wildlife Tours
If your family prefers a more relaxed adventure, a winter wildlife tour in Jackson Hole is the perfect choice. Winter is a prime time for spotting the region’s incredible wildlife, as animals like elk, bison, moose, and even bald eagles move into the valleys. Guided tours offer an up-close (yet safe) look at these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, all while exploring the snow-covered beauty of Jackson Hole’s landscapes.
Snowshoeing
Next on the list, snowshoeing is a fantastic way to immerse your family in the serene beauty of Jackson Hole’s winter landscapes (without a lot less skill required than something like snowboarding or skiing). Perfect for all ages and fitness levels, one of the things I love about snowshoeing is that it allows you to slow down and enjoy the quiet magic of snow-covered forests, meadows, and breathtaking views of the Tetons.
If you want something a little different, guided snowshoe tours offer an educational twist, teaching you about local wildlife, plants, and the area’s unique ecology, while giving kids the thrill of walking atop fresh, powdery snow. Whether you stick to well-marked trails or venture out on a private tour, snowshoeing is a peaceful, memorable way to connect with nature and share an adventure with your family. Don’t forget to pack a thermos of hot cocoa for a cozy reward after the trek!
Snowtubing
Snow tubing is an easy and exciting activity that’s perfect for families with kids of all ages. Local spots like Snow King Mountain offer groomed tubing lanes with lifts to take you back to the top, so all you have to do is sit back, hold on tight, and enjoy the ride. It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon filled with laughter and excitement (with minimal effort required).
Ice Skating
This one is one of my personal favorites! Ice skating is a delightful winter activity for the whole family and Jackson Hole is home to several charming outdoor rinks, like the Teton Village Ice Rink and the Town Square Rink, where you can skate beneath twinkling lights and enjoy the crisp mountain air. It’s the perfect way to spend a relaxed afternoon or evening, with rental skates available to make it easy for everyone to join in.
Hot Springs Soak
After a day of snowy adventures, unwind with a visit to nearby hot springs. Granite Hot Springs, located just outside of Jackson Hole, offers a peaceful escape where your family can relax in warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by snow-covered mountains. Accessible by snowmobile, dog sled, or even cross-country skiing, the journey to the springs adds an adventurous twist to this soothing experience.
Indoor Activities
If the weather turns too cold or you need a break from outdoor adventures, there are plenty of indoor activities in Jackson Hole to keep your family entertained. Start by exploring the National Museum of Wildlife Art, a world-renowned museum showcasing stunning artwork inspired by wildlife and nature. With interactive exhibits and a kid-friendly discovery center, it’s an engaging and educational experience for all ages. Plus, the museum’s café offers warm drinks and treats to enjoy after your visit.
Another great option is indoor climbing at one of Jackson Hole’s climbing gyms. These facilities are perfect for burning off energy when the weather keeps you indoors. Kids and parents alike can challenge themselves on climbing walls designed for all skill levels, making it a fun, active outing.
